Referral exclusions

A customer pays at a payment provider and returns to the shop, but GA4 credits the sale to the payment provider. Pick the services you use and copy their domains to GA4's list of unwanted referrals.

The customer pays on the payment provider's page and returns to the webshop. GA4 may treat the return as a new traffic source and record the purchase as a referral, so the ad or search engine that brought the customer in gets no credit. The list below tells GA4 that a payment provider is not a traffic source.

Your own domains

If the same GA4 ID is used on more than one domain, add all of them. Otherwise GA4 may count a move from one domain to another as a new referral and end the session. List all domains and their subdomains (for example company.com, www.company.com, blog.company.com), not subpages.

The same name with different endings and subdomains is merged into one row, for example (?:(www|blog)\.)?company\.(com|fi). Your rows go to the top of the list.

What do you use?

Everything is selected. Uncheck the services you don't use and their rows leave the list. Rows without a service always show.

List

In GA4, choose Referral domain and the row's condition. Copy the value with the button and paste it into the value field. GA4 allows at most 50 rows per data stream. You can merge a group's rows into one regex from the group header. Drag a row by its handle () to another or a new group, or move it with the row's group menu. The grouping is remembered in this browser.

One big regex

You can also copy all visible rows of the list as one regex, whether or not groups are merged. Your own domains keep their own rows and are not included here. Rows with the contains condition become .*domain.*, so the result works the same whether GA4 compares the whole domain or part of it.

GA4 allows at most 50 rows per data stream, and one big regex fits in it as a single row. If you set a length limit, the regex is split along row boundaries and each part is its own GA4 row. I have not verified GA4's regex length limit, so try it in GA4.

How to add them in GA4

    1. Open Admin → Data streams → your web stream → Configure tag settings → Show all → List unwanted referrals.
    2. Choose Referral domain and the condition from the table. Copy the value with the row's button and paste it into the value field.
    3. Add the next row with Add condition and repeat.
    4. Save and make a test purchase. Check in DebugView that the payment service no longer shows up as a new source.

A regex matches the whole domain, so you don't need to mark its start or end. GA4 reads regexes with RE2 syntax.
